b-k-i at the BDIA Handbook Exhibition in Hamburg
The ‘UmBauwende’ (Renovation Revolution) represents a fundamental shift in the construction industry. Rather than demolition and resource-intensive new construction, the focus is shifting towards the careful handling of existing buildings, sustainable conversions, and the enhancement of existing structures. Interior architecture plays a central role in this approach, working directly with the existing building envelope and viewing buildings as long-term resources of cultural and social value.
This comprehensive topic forms the framework for the content of this year’s BDIA Handbook Exhibition at the AIT Architecture Salon in Hamburg. The BDIA Handbook of Interior Architecture showcases projects that exemplify the transformation of existing buildings for the future, focusing on sustainable concepts, flexible usage scenarios, and the contemporary redevelopment of historical structures.
b-k-i is represented several times in this context. The Start Up Campus Paderborn project is featured in the handbook and will constitute the focus of a presentation by Sabine Krumrey at the evening event on 29 January 2026. Using this project as an example, she will demonstrate how interior architecture can act as a mediating discipline between existing structures, new usage requirements, and sustainable objectives.
In addition, the handbook’s longlist includes three other b-k-i projects: the Oberhausen Council Chamber, the Danfoss staff restaurant with barista bar in Offenbach, and Havens Living Main Volta. These projects will be presented alongside all the other entries during the event in the form of a continuous display.
The BDIA Handbook Exhibition will be held at the AIT Architektursalon Hamburg from 26 to 30 January 2026. The evening event, featuring lectures and project presentations, will take place on 29 January and will provide an opportunity for professional exchange on the role of interior architecture in the context of the UmBauwende (Renovation Revolution).
