Start-up Campus Paderborn

Design for Start-ups

Which spatial environment supports the next generation in their work? This question guided brandherm + krumrey when designing the garage 33 start-up campus in Paderborn. Located on the former Barker site, a centre for technology transfer and entrepreneurship has been established by Paderborn University, featuring diverse work and meeting spaces. The guiding principle for the interior design is the prototype development of start-ups during their ideation process.

The start-up campus at Paderborn University aims to provide a platform for innovation and entrepreneurship. The mentality of experimentation and unconventional ideas is reflected in the interior design. Built-in elements made from industrial materials such as trapezoidal sheet metal and steel pipes correspond to the fair-faced concrete architecture and partially visible ceiling installations. The fresh basic colour is blue, which takes up the corporate design of garage 33. On the ground floor with its two main entrances, metal structures divide the spacious entrance hall and create a meeting point that encourages communication and exchange. Upholstered furniture, benches and other seating areas invite students to engage in conversation. Seminar and event rooms are accessible form the reception area. There are also co-working spaces and various workshops for the creation of prototypes. The first and second floors are dedicated to focus rooms and office spaces for entrepreneurs, while the third floor offers an additional premium event area as well as more co-working and meeting rooms. The formal clarity of the building with its large windows is enlivened by the various shades of blue used for the built-in elements. This is complemented by colourful highlight in salmon red, mint green or lemon yellow, found on walls and in seating niches. These niches also provide users with a place to retreat for conversations or focused work on their laptops. Warm materials such as oak wood and textiles, together with many plants, generate a pleasant contrast to the rather cool building aesthetics. The result is a vibrant environment that is conducive to communication and supports founders in developing their visions into businesses.
