Dynamic diversity

Not far from Hamburg City Hall, the Burstah Quarter was built in 2023 comprising of residential units, offices and restaurants. The agency group IPG Mediabrands has moved into a new location in the modern new-build neighbourhood between Nikolaifleet and Großer Burstah. brandherm + krumrey was commissioned to develop a contemporary office concept for their working environment. The new office was to offer space for concentrated project work and teamwork, as well as facilitating informal dialogue and client contacts. The agency group also wished for an urban flair within the Hamburg city center setting. The overall aim was to create an environment with fresh ideas that would inspire employees and make the office an attractive place to work collaboratively, in the era of remote working. For the approximately 3,000 square meter office space, brandherm + krumrey adapted a design concept developed for the Frankfurt branch in 2021. This concept is based on the diverse structure of the company and invites identification with the CI colours. It has already won over employees at two other locations of the agency group. At the heart of the office design is an open-plan layout with shifting and overlapping room functions. In Hamburg, this concept was applied to two parts of the building, both on two floors. The result is a place for coming together that offers an above-average number of communal spaces for teamwork and the collective development of ideas, alongside traditional workstations. Instead of a conventional design, we created meeting and retreat rooms, pantries and a large deli as individual room ‘pixels’. Blue and red upholstered furniture, shelving and textile room dividers act as ‘pixel’ elements, playfully dividing the work and meeting zones. Pixel-like carpet tiles in fresh shades of blue and red also mark out the different spatial offerings. In this way, the otherwise rather neutral colour mood of the office areas is repeatedly loosened up and accentuated in surprising ways. Additional fixtures and conference furniture in natural wood look contribute to the positive overall atmosphere, as does the customised lighting concept. Depending on the room function, different lighting moods support concentrated work or relaxed dialogue. In this way, new settings for individual work, team meetings, informal discussions or relaxation are continuously being recreated. The interplay of creative inspiration and an open sequence of rooms promotes a dynamic culture of communication.
