Family apartment in Hamburg’s HafenCity
Now more than ever, the way we live is an expression of our attitude. Private spaces are becoming places of retreat and stages for everyday life, reflecting social changes on a small scale. These spaces embody the need for closeness and openness, peace and exchange, and stability in turbulent times. Interior architecture becomes a medium through which function, atmosphere and the realities of life can be reconciled.
Brandherm + Krumrey (bki) has translated these questions into a contemporary living concept for the interior renovation of a private residence in Hamburg’s HafenCity. Spanning approximately 200 square metres over two floors, the resulting family home strikes a balance between spaciousness and intimacy.
The starting point for the design is a striking existing building, whose architectural clarity has been deliberately enhanced. The conversion is a careful transformation in which existing qualities have been retained and spatial structures have been reorganised and adapted to meet contemporary living requirements. Open, flowing spatial relationships characterise the communal areas, creating opportunities for socialising, while strategically placed retreats provide spaces for peace and relaxation. The restructured floor plan naturally integrates all functions into daily life. Even the children’s room is not conceived as an enclosed, separate space, but as part of the shared living area, offering a distinct atmosphere and clear retreat opportunities. Clear spatial sequences, targeted lines of sight and differentiated zoning strike a balance between openness and privacy, enabling the living space to adapt to various usage scenarios.
The material and colour scheme is characterised by restraint and precision, following a natural, base palette. Muted tones and high-quality materials provide a calm foundation, while carefully placed colour accents, such as warm reds and terracotta tones, bring energy and character to the rooms without disturbing their tranquility. Exposed brick walls and modern glass elements come together to create an appealing dialogue between the existing structure and contemporary architecture.
Custom-made fixtures that provide generous storage solutions play a central role. Rather than plain cupboard surfaces, they create space-defining elements and cosy niches that structure the floor plan and add depth to the interior. Floor-length curtains perform a functional zoning role and add a soft, elegant touch of comfort to the rooms.
Loose furnishings and lighting from renowned manufacturers such as COR, Miniforms, Normann Copenhagen, Montana Furniture, Vibia and Artemide complement the living concept and underline the commitment to quality and timelessness. Textiles and floor coverings from Kvadrat, JAB, Object Carpet and Bolon enhance the homey feel and contribute to the acoustic and atmospheric quality of the rooms.
The result is a living space that is both communicative and tranquil: modern and enduring, open and sheltered. This family home in Hamburg demonstrates how precise design, finely tuned details and a sensitive approach to the existing structure can create a home that seamlessly combines everyday living, retreat and interaction.
