Since its foundation, the REWE Group has had its headquarters in Cologne. The retail group’s Zweigniederlassung West (Branch Office West) resides in a building dating from the 1990s in nearby Hürth-Efferen. As the design of the reception was no longer up to date, brandherm + krumrey were commissioned to modernise the 160-square-metre foyer. The result offers employees and visitors a spatial situation that is as inviting as it is surprising.
The fire protection regulations stipulating a division of the foyer into two sections posed a design challenge for the modernisation. With a view to the two areas of the original stairs and the actual reception, brandherm + krumrey developed the idea of a multifunctional room-in-room concept. The first impression upon entering the branch office is very clear: next to the stairway, the sculptural design of which acts as an eye-catcher, the reception zone was implemented as an expansive box with various functions. On the one hand, it controls access, but on the other hand, it serves as a temporary workspace and meeting area. The room-in-room solution is clearly visible here. A dynamic and rough design with the open vaulted ceiling of the existing building and indirect lighting further support the clear spatial impression. The welcoming choice of colours and materials reflects the corporate identity and at the same time translates it into a pleasant and inviting ambience. Classic reception desk functions were thus supplemented to create the REWE Welcome Lounge.
